Donor FAQ

Our 501(c)(3) status & what it means for you

BAU Farm Foundation is an active IRS 501(c)(3) public charity · EIN 42-3647027

Is BAU Farm Foundation really a 501(c)(3)?
Yes. BAU Farm Foundation (dba Service to Soil), EIN 42-3647027, is an active 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity recognized by the IRS. You can view or download our IRS determination letter or verify us in the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
Yes. Contributions to a 501(c)(3) public charity are deductible to the fullest extent allowed by U.S. federal tax law. No goods or services are provided in exchange for your donation unless explicitly stated at checkout. Consult your tax advisor for your specific situation.
Will I receive a receipt for my records?
Yes. Every donation triggers an emailed receipt with the amount, date, our legal name, EIN, and the required IRS acknowledgment language. Keep it with your tax records. Recurring donors receive a receipt for each successful charge.
When and how do I get my tax receipt?
Immediately. As soon as your payment succeeds you land on a confirmation page with a downloadable PDF receipt, and the same receipt is emailed to the address you entered. Every receipt lists the amount, date, our legal name and EIN, and the IRS acknowledgment language. Past receipts are always available in your donor portal. The IRS requires written acknowledgment for any single gift of $250 or more, so keep it with your tax records.
How does the “cover processing fees” option work?
Card networks and Stripe charge about 2.9% + $0.30 on every gift. If you leave the fee-coverage box checked, we add that amount on top of your gift so the full amount you chose reaches the program — the checkout page itemizes your gift, the fee coverage, and the final charge before you pay. It's completely optional: uncheck it and the fee simply comes out of your gift instead. Either way, your tax-deductible amount is the total charged to your card, including any fee coverage.
What do the “impact by the numbers” figures mean?
They're our stated commitments and cost benchmarks, not audited historical results. 95% to program costs reflects our target allocation for the first program year (55% tuition and stipends, 25% tools, seed and inputs, 15% farm operations, 5% administration). 3 days is the length of the hands-on intensive on our model farm. $250 is our current per-seat cost for tools and materials. 100% tax-deductible refers to your full charge being deductible under IRC §170. As cohorts graduate, we'll publish audited outcome numbers alongside these targets.
How much of my donation actually reaches the program?
Because we run lean with a working-farm model and volunteer board, the majority of every dollar goes directly to tuition, tools, seed, and stipends for farmers in our 3-day intensive. Payment processing fees (roughly 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction) are the only unavoidable deduction.
Can my employer match my gift?
Very likely. As a 501(c)(3), we qualify for most corporate matching-gift programs. Submit our legal name (BAU Farm Foundation) and EIN 42-3647027 through your employer's matching portal, and forward any verification requests to Diamond.cleary@baufarmfoundation.org.
Can I donate stock, a DAF grant, or make a planned gift?
Yes. We accept appreciated securities, donor-advised fund (DAF) grants, and planned/legacy gifts. Email Diamond.cleary@baufarmfoundation.org and we'll send transfer instructions and our W-9.
Can I remain anonymous?
Yes. You may donate anonymously — we won't list your name publicly. For gifts of $100 or more we still issue a receipt to the email on file so you have IRS documentation, but your identity is not shared externally.
